OAKLAND
Oakland is ideally situated on I-55, Highway 51, and Highway 32 and is served by rail from The Grenada Railroad LLC (GRYR) which operates 228 miles of track, running north/south along the I-55 corridor between Canton, MS and Memphis, TN.
GRYR is strategically positioned, with access to six Class I carriers: Canadian National (CN), Union Pacific (UP), Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF), Norfolk Southern (NS), Kansas City Southern (KCS) and CSX Transportation (CSX). Oakland is one of three transload sites along the route.
More than 19,000 vehicles a day move through Oakland at I-55, with 4,200 per day on Highway 32 and 1,500 vehicles per day on Highway 51.
George Payne Cossar State Park is located at Oakland on Enid Lake and is known for its fishing and camping. The 6,100 acre state park is a part of the 44,037 acre Corps of Engineers Enid Lake.
The Holly Springs National Forest is situated with 21,000 acres between Oakland and Coffeeville.
The Bob Tyler Fish Hatchery is located at Enid Lake, just off the Enid I-55 exit while the Jamie Whitten Plant Materials Center, serving 7 southeastern states on 360 acres, is nearby at the Tillatoba exit off I-55.
The two largest industries in Oakland are Ajinomoto and Grays Power Supply.
Ajinomoto is the largest with more than 500 employees. The Oakland plant is the largest of the 8 food service plants owned by Ajinomoto in the US.
Grays Power Supply is a home-grown entity which services electric power companies and lays fiber among its major services. Grays currently employs more than 80 people.
